On January 3rd, 2018 “Grown-ish” a “Black-ish” spinoff starring Yara Shahidi premiered on FreeForm. “Grown-ish” follows Zoey Johnson into her freshman year of college at the fictional California University for Liberal Arts. Zoey is shown taking on the challenges of being on her own and coming into her own. Each episode follows a similar structure to “Black-ish” taking on a new issue every episode. The whole show is seen through Zoey’s perspective narrating each obstacle she comes across including but not limited to, her father having separation anxiety, not know how to answer the infamous “U up?” text, and learning how to balance her social life with her academic obligations. Critics have mostly positive reactions to the show, and those who aren’t completely raving do say that it has potential and just needs to get its feet sturdier on the ground. Besides Shahidi, the show stars Trevor Jackson, Jordan Buhat, Francia Rosa, Dean Cole, Emily Arlook, Chris Parnell, and Chloe and Halle Bailey. Chloe and Halle Bailey are twins hand-picked by Beyoncé for stardom. The twins also sing the show’s theme song. Yara Shahidi does takes advantage of being the voice of “Grown-ish” and shines in the role. Grown-ish is one of the few shows that actually shows an accurate representation of college, besides the unnaturally large dorm rooms. They deal with prominent issues that this generation particularly has to deal with. The show has already lived up to the hype, and I’m excited for what the future holds.
